Apparently, "If we build it, they will come" doesn't work for international airports.
A KLM flight scheduled to land in Hyderabad Sunday morning didn't get the news about Hyderabad's new airport, which came on-line at Midnight Saturday. Apparently they were quite surprised to hear that their destination airport had closed; and they flew around India all night looking for a place to land.
This is illustrative of the massive growth in India (how often does a brand new $600M airport go on-line?), and also the tremendous difficulty of cross-timezone communication...
Here's more about the airport. Glad I wasn't on that flight... Or trying to make a connection through Hyderabad Saturday evening.
And thanks DS, for the the link!
