Free, and worth every penny!

In a recent correspondence with one of the three or so people who regularly read my blog, I received a long and well ordered list of even more free / open-source software tools.

Since starting my own business a few short weeks ago, one of the the things I've been thinking about (well, really obsessing about) is how to acquire world-class tools while expending as little as possible of my precious capital. I think that's a worthy goal for anyone, so I'll post this list, with the editorial caveat that while I use a lot of these tools myself, I haven't done anything here but copy-paste the text of a message from my good friend Doug.

As always, YMMV.

In your search for free and/or open source alternatives to commercial software here are some recommendations I use on my system(s). I've included the name, category (what they do), and URL. Some may be for personal use only and not for distribution to entire organizations, but worth checking out if you were equipping a new team and trying to minimize cost (or just supporting independent development and/or the open source movement).

Another free secure password program is PassPack, an online password manager.
Soon we'll be adding a new "sharing" feature that will definitely be useful for small companies:

If you have any suggestions let me know and I'll put you in contact with one of the founders.
